Causes of Early Pregnancy Cramping and What You Can Do to Relieve the Pain

You may panic when you realize that you are experiencing early pregnancy cramping. Although there is no reason for you to worry about it too much, it's still important to know what causes it and what you can do to somehow alleviate the pain. This condition can be mainly attributed to the enlargement of the uterus. It exerts pressure on the inner walls of your body which is why you experience cramping. Another reason would be implantation. This is when the embryo is embedding itself in the lining of the uterus. The stretching of ligaments can also be a cause of dull ache across the belly or a sharp pain on one side. Some women complain about this pain most severely when they get up from a bed, chair or bathtub and sometimes when they cough. If you experience this type of pain or discomfort without bleeding then there is nothing to worry about. Pain should be short.

However if you experience early pregnancy cramping with profuse bleeding, you must go see your health care provider at the soonest time possible. I don't mean to scare you but this can mean you are having a miscarriage. The reasons for such may vary from genetic causes, radiation to mutagenic substances, viral infections and the use of certain medicines. Aside from profuse bleeding, fever, chills, faintness and vaginal discharge accompanied by severe cramping should also be a cause of alarm and you have to communicate with your doctor right away.

To help relieve symptoms of early pregnancy cramping, you can put your feet up and try to relax. When you rest comfortably, the pain gradually fades. While you're comfortably seated or lying on your back, put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and place it on the lowest setting on your belly. You can also use a heating pad if you want. Taking a warm bath or shower will also help you relax. Avoid quick changes in your position to avoid straining your stomach and muscles. Make sure you are taking enough fluids as well.
